I'm sharing some observations based on our experiences in being cold contacted by various funding companies' business development departments.

1. Your business development people should know precisely who they should be targeting. They should never blanket e-mail solicitations to an entire team using e-mail addresses designated for customers.
2. They should have a basic understanding of the English language.
3. They should be curious.. At least a little bit. Your business development people should never be made look foolish; "have you been to our site?" "Oh, I am checking it out now (or will later)."
4. They should never cold contact someone who has never contacted them with an e-mail like this; "I'm Bill with Expert Funding. I am e-mailing you to see what you can do for us."
