    Lead sources

    We are a relatively young ISO and we are really struggling to find a quality lead source with substantial, high quality leads. Meridian was a disaster, and a few others provide decent (however low dollar) leads.

    Any thoughts?

    Buying leads from a reseller are never as good as buying from a direct source when it comes to quality.

    Isn't this just the question of the day....

    In my opinion, referral networks and telemarketing are the way to generate the best leads. Pounding UCC's always works, even when all else may fail. As someone mentioned before, you can always reinvest earnings into targeted direct mail campaigns (sorry for not giving credit for who mentioned this), which is one of the most proven, effective ways of marketing. Just my 2 cents.

    I've recommended on anthother thread doing a direct mail campaign to business owners home addresses who have or had a cash advance. We have that data by the way and we also offer an in-house direct mail service.

    I'm all for referrals but if you are just getting started on a lean budget or you're tired of the same song and dance from the 'lead guys' try something proven to produce since the days of Sears and Roebuck. Direct Marketing (direct mail, phones and nowadays email) is a less expensive avenue and usually a more cost-effective alternative. All of the direct lenders and big resellers do it, why? You know why, because it works.

    Let me guess you tried it once and it didn't work perfectly so you determined it doesn't work for 'your' company. Did Mickey Mantle hit a home run on his first at bat? No. (For the young whipper-snappers sub in your favorite current slugger.) My two cents, work with someone who knows what works. You need a solid creative (mail piece, email creative, phone script) and a solid list of business owners.

    If you are on a shoestring budget hit the phones and emails first then reinvest in direct mail from the profits you've earned. This is how a lot of the new companies get the ball rolling and how the rich get richer. My advice is to find a reputable marketing company that specializes in the business loan space and experiment with the different products, crunch the numbers and reinvest in the one that works best for you.

    I recommend to purchase data and produce your own leads. Whether you do direct mail, powerdialing, fax blasting, email campaigns, or anything else, when you produce your own leads and eliminate competition (eg. not buying aged leads/resold leads) you can max out more deals. From my experience this results in a higher ROI in general.

    However, there are certainly difficulties with producing your own leads. For instance, if you direct mail, you have to create a piece, run separate campaigns, track the metrics, rinse and repeat. It can be very expensive to reach the >1% response rate.

    Cold calling is labor intensive, takes time, and you have to have the liquid capital to absorb the high turnover/training times.

    Scalability is another key factor. Perhaps you find a niche to direct mail to that is working well. Is it duplicatable? Can you reproduce similar results targeting a different demographic/region/industry/revenue?

    For many cases to get started it is better to simply purchase leads and get to work. You can always sample generating your own leads once sufficient capital has been obtained. Just measure those metrics and make sure whatever you buy is producing. If not, you can always use their lead campaigns for ideas on what you'd like to try yourself!

    However, for most ISO's without significant experience in marketing and measuring, it's best to just purchase leads for your salespeople to work.
