Houston Suspension of ACH
Glad to see companies assisting business owners in affected areas by suspending ach repayment for a duration. We have colleagues and friends in those areas and the devastation is tragic.

There is no choice ...and 40% of those businesses will never recover.
I am sure this is also one of the last natural disasters that National Flood insurance can handle as well...premiums will go thru the roof for homes on the water or you cant get flood insurance at all.
This will lead to property values plummeting because you will not be able to sell unless there is a huge down payment or cash offer.
My 1 merchant is on high ground and brokers told me not everyone is under water, but the roads are closed.

Mcaguru,
I know why you are alarmed by Houston in particular.
I do not want to jinx you or them. I hope they all recover.

It very well could be 40%, but the piece of data that is missing to justify the statistic is over what time period. A month? 90 days? A year?
Second place? Set of steak knives.

That is great for those merchants in that area. Such a tragedy, but hey this is not global warming and has nothing to do with climate science right?
On another note check out this link:

Marcus - I lived in New Orleans and Katrina - The loss of Business was more in the Range of 60 percent - You have new people moving back in but not the original natives so you had a very large shift in Business and People. The population of New Orleans fell from 484,674 before Katrina (April 2000) to an estimated 230,172 after Katrina (July 2006) a decrease of 254,502 people and a loss of over half of the city's population.(1) By July of 2015, the population was back up to 386,617 80% of what it was in 2000.
Demographic Shifts
The demographic makeup of New Orleans and its metro area is much different today than it was pre-Katrina. The city has lost white and black residents, but whites now represent a larger share of the population than they did before the storm. And while African Americans are still the majority in New Orleans, their raw population drop is staggering: Nearly 100,000 fewer African Americans live in the city today than in 2000. Around 11,500 fewer white residents live there.
Startup Culture
One interesting economic outcome of Katrina has been the boom in startup businesses. The number of new businesses spiked after the storm, as entrepreneurs provided services such as debris removal and construction. But the fact that ten years after the storm the startup rate is 64 percent higher than the national average says a lot about New Orleans business climate.Last edited by michaelh; 08-30-2017 at 06:09 PM.
