Does Square not allow early payoffs?? I know American Express does something similar, but never heard about Square not allowing an early payoff.

Square doesn't allow early payoffs. All repayment has to come from the merchant's square transactions.

what if the merchant is selling the business?? How would they handle the outstanding balance in that case??

That's a good question. But, selling the business would certainly be an act of default.
