Mastercard reaches 49% e-commerce tokenisation in Europe

Mastercard has achieved 49% e-commerce tokenisation across Europe, just one year after announcing its goal of 100%. The progress was revealed at Money 20/20 in Amsterdam by Brice van de Walle, EVP of core payments, Europe. He credited the rapid growth to strong collaboration with issuers, merchants, acquirers, and processors.

Van de Walle expressed confidence in reaching full tokenisation by 2030. “We’re already halfway there,” he noted, highlighting the joint industry effort. Mastercard views tokenisation as a key to safer, smoother online payments.

He also announced progress on biometric Passkeys for online purchases. Three partners — Dinero, Solidgate, and Utoppia — have already gone live with the technology.

Van de Walle emphasized Passkeys’ role in reducing friction during checkout. By using biometrics instead of one-time passwords, consumers can authenticate directly on their device, boosting both conversion and approval rates.
